For Preventing Fouling by Organics, Biological Material, Colloids


Besides dissolved salts that can form scales, there are organic and biological materials that can also foul membranes. Colloids, silt, other fine particulates also can act as foulants. These materials usually can be removed by good membrane cleaning. However, some feed waters contain such a large amount of these types of foulants that the system needs to be cleaned far too frequently. Antifoulants are injected into the feed water, in the same fashion as antiscalants, to react with this mixture of colloids and organics and prevent them from coating the membrane surface and lowering productivity.

Protec RO™ C

ProTec RO™ C is a highly effective anticoagulant and antifoulant for all membrane systems treating feed waters with high concentrations of silt, organics, colloids and fine particulates. It is effective at low doses, and does not flocculate dissolved polymers such as residual coagulants, iron or aluminum-rich silica. ProTec RO™ C is effective in reducing fouling of colloidal matter in sea and brackish surface waters, and industrial and municipal wastewaters. It prevents fouling by colloidal organic matter which includes humic acid, lignin, tannin, microorganisms, polysaccharides, lipids, proteins, cellular debris and organic polymers from water treatment and inorganic colloids including silica, clay, silt, sulfur and various microcrystalline precipitates.

ProTec RO™ C should be injected into the feed-stream prior to the static mixer and cartridge filter. Effective pH range is 2 –14. If frozen, may be thawed and mixed before use. Stability is excellent, but best used within 12 months.

Dosing Recommendations:

In the useful dosage range of 1–100 ppm neat (liquid), and 0.3–33ppm (powder), the liquid being 33% w/w of the powder in water. Initial dose is 5 mg/L. By monitoring the concentrate stream and trend charts, optimal dosage can be achieved for the control of colloidal particles in feedwater of microbial, plant or inorganic origins, and organic compounds in industrial process or waste streams.
